The Issue Of Child Prostitution - 843 Words

Child prostitution has been defined by the UN as the act of engaging or offering the services of a child to perform sexual acts for money or other consideration with that person or any other person. The issue of child prostitution in Sri Lanka is that children are being forced to revert to selling their bodies for money to survive. Tourists specially come to Sri Lanka for the purpose of finding a young prostitute, male or female. The main issue involving this unfortunate situation is that practically nothing is being done to resolve these practices. One of the effects of sex trafficking for children is that young girls and boys are being forced to live a life they never imagined for themselves. They are either being tricked into believing that they are receiving a better life in Sri Lanka, or feel that they have no other choice but to turn to selling themselves for money. â€Å"Within the country, women and children are subjected to sex trafficking in brothels. Boys are more likely than girls to be forced into prostitution in coastal areas for domestic child sex tourism,† (United States Department of State 2). In Sri Lanka, the problem of child prostitution, primarily among boys, is highly visible in beach resort areas. Their ages generally range from eight to 15 years. These young male sex workers are usually school dropouts, working for little money while nurturing the dream of quick and easy money.
